Hockey Betting Basics: Markets and Settlement
Quick Summary
- Hockey markets include the moneyline, puck line, totals and period bets.
- Overtime and shootouts change how some bets settle.
- Scores are low, so single goals swing results.
- We did not confirm hockey on KKBD; check its sportsbook.
Hockey is a low-scoring sport, and that shapes every market. A single goal can flip a result, and a bet can hinge on whether overtime counts. This post covers the basic markets, how settlement works and what beginners often miss. We did not confirm whether KKBD lists hockey, so open its sportsbook page to see what is available. The explanations below apply to any hockey market you find.
What is the moneyline?
A moneyline bet is a pick of the winner. In most markets overtime and a shootout count, so a draw at the end of normal time does not exist. Check that line in the market rules.
A separate three-way market treats the end of normal time as final, which adds a draw option. The two markets can show very different prices for the same match.
A regulation-time moneyline, also called a three-way line, excludes overtime. If the match is level after normal time, the draw wins and both teams lose your bet.
What is a puck line?
It is the hockey handicap, usually set at plus or minus 1.5 goals. A favorite at minus 1.5 must win by two or more. An underdog at plus 1.5 wins the bet if it wins or loses by one goal.
Because many games are decided by one goal, the plus side is often more common than it looks. The price reflects that. Compare with the handicap logic in football betting.
Because the favorite often wins by exactly one goal in tight games, the puck line price on the favorite is longer than its moneyline price. That gap is the cost of the extra protection the plus side offers.
How do totals and period bets work?
A total asks if goals go over or under a line, commonly five and a half. Period markets treat each of the three periods as its own bet, which can settle quickly.
Empty-net goals late in a game can push a total over at the last moment. That is a reason to read what is counted.
Period bets are about a single twenty-minute window, which makes them very random. A strong team can go scoreless for a period and still win the game. Treat them as high-variance entertainment.
Players serving penalties also create power plays, where goals come more easily, so totals can jump in minutes.
How do overtime and shootouts matter?
Different leagues have different overtime rules, including sudden death and shootouts. A shootout can decide a match on a single attempt. Markets may or may not count it.
The same issue appears with extra time in other sports. Read the market conditions, as with tennis retirement rules.
Playoff overtime is often played in full periods with no shootout, so a game can run long. A bet that needs a result can stay open late into the night.
What are common beginner mistakes?
Betting on a team only because of its reputation, ignoring goalie news and overlooking back-to-back games that tire teams. Starting goalies matter a lot; a change shifts the price.
The bookmaker watches this news. If you do not, assume the price reflects it better than you do.
Another one is assuming an injury report is complete. Late scratches change lines minutes before a game starts, and a bet placed earlier stands at the old terms.
How do you stay in control?
Keep bets small, one market per game, and avoid chasing after a late goal. Fast play creates quick decisions; set a match total beforehand.
Read responsible gaming for limit tools. Adults 18 and over only.
Keep a list of the markets you understand and ignore the rest. Hockey offers many props, and fewer is better when you are learning.
A written plan for the evening beats a decision made after a goal.
